Byron Bay in a campervan

Byron Bay is a stop on our East Coast guide. This guide is research, not our own story: every fact is from Byron Shire Council or NSW National Parks, with the date we checked it. It covers the council's camping rules and fines, where you can stay, and Cape Byron, the most easterly point of the Australian mainland.

2WD verdict

Yes, Byron is fine in a 2WD van, but you can't sleep in it on the street. Byron Shire Council says camping in streets, parks and reserves is prohibited, and rangers patrol 7 days a week. Book a campground instead.

Key points

  • No street camping. The on-the-spot fine is $110, and Court Attendance Notices can bring fines of up to $2,200, the council says.
  • Book ahead. The council lists campgrounds at Byron Bay, Suffolk Park, Broken Head, Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby and Rummery Park.
  • Pay to park at the lighthouse. Park entry fees apply at the Cape Byron Lighthouse car park.
  • Allow time for the cape. NSW National Parks suggests 1 to 3 hours for the Walgun Cape Byron walking track.
Before you go. Always double-check that walks, falls, roads and attractions are open before you go, to avoid disappointment, and check current fees at the time of booking. Closures and prices can change at short notice.
