Cairns in a campervan

Cairns was the first place Luke explored in Australia, more than ten years ago, after a connection from Sydney. He remembers the parties, the relaxed atmosphere and getting over jet lag. We haven't been back together yet, so the rest of this guide is research: the council's camping rules, where a van can park, the Lagoon, the reef and Kuranda, and the Daintree, which is something we'd love to do. Every official fact has its source and the date we checked it.

2WD verdict

Yes, Cairns is fine in a 2WD van, and so is the Daintree as far as Cape Tribulation. Queensland Parks says conventional 2WD vehicles can get from the Daintree River ferry to Cape Tribulation. The Bloomfield Track beyond it is 4WD only. In town, the rule to know is the camping ban.

Key points

  • No camping on council land. That includes sleeping in a van on roadsides, the Esplanade, car parks and beaches; the on-the-spot fine is $834.
  • Free, but short. The council's Babinda Rotary Park and Babinda Boulders campgrounds allow 72 hours, then no return for 14 days.
  • RV parking in town. Hartley Street Car Park has bays for large RVs and campervans.
  • Swim in the Lagoon. The Esplanade Lagoon is free and lifeguard-monitored.
  • Stingers. Swim at patrolled beaches and inside nets, especially from November to May.
Before you go. Always double-check that walks, falls, roads and attractions are open before you go, to avoid disappointment, and check current fees at the time of booking. Closures and prices can change at short notice.

Our Cairns

Cairns was the first place Luke explored in Australia, more than ten years ago, after a connection from Sydney. He remembers the parties, the relaxed atmosphere and getting over jet lag. We haven't been back together since, but we'd love to, and the Daintree is top of our list for when we do.

Camping rules and where to stay

Official advice (checked 4 November 2026). Cairns Regional Council says camping isn't permitted on council-controlled land, including roadsides, the Esplanade, cemeteries, public parks, car parks, sporting grounds, drainage reserves and beaches. Camping includes staying overnight in vehicles, campervans and RVs, and the on-the-spot fine is $834. The council's free Babinda Rotary Park and Babinda Boulders campgrounds have a maximum stay of 72 hours (3 nights), and you can't return to the same campground within 14 days. RV dump points are at Manunda (8-38 Macnamara Street, 7am to 4pm) and Babinda Rotary Park (Cairns Regional Council: camping and caravan parks). Babinda Boulders is about 6 km from Babinda, with an unpowered campsite and basic amenities, and dogs aren't allowed (Cairns Regional Council: Babinda Boulders).

For longer stays, the council points travellers to the region's commercial caravan and tourist parks.

Parking a van in town

Official advice (checked 4 November 2026). Cairns Regional Council says Hartley Street Car Park has 450 spaces including RV parking, at $2.20 an hour capped at $4.30 a day, with paid hours 8.30am to 5pm on weekdays. The RV bays are for large vehicles, including motorhomes and campervans, that can't fit in a standard space, and payment is required (Cairns Regional Council: off-street car parks). Parking isn't overnight camping.
Official advice (checked 4 November 2026). The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is 4,800 m² of saltwater, free and lifeguard-monitored. Cairns Regional Council lists it as open 6am to 9pm, except Wednesdays, when it opens at noon (Cairns Regional Council: Esplanade facilities).
Official advice (checked 4 November 2026). Cairns is in stinger country: swim at patrolled beaches and inside nets, especially from November to May (Queensland Government: dangerous marine life).

The Daintree: something we'd love to do

We haven't been to the Daintree yet. From our research, it's very doable in a 2WD as far as Cape Tribulation.

Official advice (checked 4 November 2026). Queensland Parks says the Daintree River ferry runs 5am to midnight daily, and conventional 2WD vehicles can get from the ferry to Cape Tribulation, though caravans aren't recommended. Crocodiles live in the rivers and on the beaches, so obey the signs (Queensland Parks: Daintree visiting safely). The Bloomfield Track north of Cape Tribulation is 4WD only and not suitable for campervans (Douglas Shire Council: Bloomfield Track).

Day trips: the Tablelands and Mossman Gorge

Official advice (checked 4 November 2026). Mossman Gorge is 77 km north of Cairns. You park at the Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre and take its shuttle bus into the gorge, every 15 minutes from 8am to 5pm (last bus back 4.30pm). From 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 it's $18.20 for adults. There's no footpath from the car park to the gorge (Mossman Gorge: getting here and around).

Island day trips and Crystal Cascades

Official advice (checked 4 November 2026). Queensland Parks says Green Island is 27 km offshore, and most visitors go on commercial boats from the Reef Fleet Terminal at the end of Spence Street, taking 50 to 60 minutes. Boats may not run in strong winds, and pets aren't allowed (Queensland Parks: visiting Green Island safely). Fitzroy Island is reached by ferry from Cairns in about 45 minutes; Queensland Parks suggests confirming your transfer 24 hours before, and warns that stingers and crocodiles can occur in the waters (Queensland Parks: visiting Fitzroy Island safely).
