2WD verdict
Yes, the Gold Coast is fine in a 2WD van. The beaches, theme parks and hinterland national parks in this guide are all on sealed roads. The catch is size, not traction: the hinterland roads are steep, winding and narrow, Queensland Parks says the Green Mountains (O'Reilly's) road isn't suitable for RVs over 6 m, and multi-storey car parks have height limits that a high-roof van won't clear (Queensland Parks: Lamington, visiting safely, City of Gold Coast: Bruce Bishop Carpark, Surfers Paradise).
Key points
- No free camping. The City of Gold Coast says it's illegal to sleep overnight in a vehicle parked in a public place, and officers patrol 7 days a week.
- Book a park. The City runs 7 Gold Coast Tourist Parks, most of them right by a beach.
- Big vans and parking. Vehicles 7.5 m or longer, or 4.5 t GVM or more, can't stop on residential or built-up roads for longer than 1 hour.
- Check the height. Bruce Bishop Carpark in Surfers Paradise, for example, doesn't allow vehicles over 2.08 m.
- Swim between the flags. The City's lifeguards patrol 28 beaches all year round.
Our time on the Gold Coast
We've spent time on the Gold Coast, including Surfers Paradise. Everything else in this guide comes from the City of Gold Coast, Queensland Parks, Destination Gold Coast and the operators themselves, so you can check the rules and the details before you go.
Camping rules for vans
In practice that means a booked site every night you're on the coast. The beachfront car parks and esplanades aren't an option, whatever an old app review says.
Where to stay in a van
- Book ahead for school holidays. The beachside parks are the obvious choice in a van, so expect them to fill early in peak periods.
- Pets: Gold Coast Tourist Parks lists Kirra Beach and Jacobs Well as pet-friendly (Gold Coast Tourist Parks: our parks).
- Apps: WikiCamps (WikiCamps Australia) lists the paid parks with user reviews and is useful for comparing prices. Inland, in the hinterland and the Scenic Rim, you may find quieter or cheaper paid options. A listing in an app doesn't make a spot legal, though: on the Gold Coast itself the City's rules above still apply, so check the signs and the council rules wherever you stop.
- In the national parks: The Settlement in Springbrook is the only camping area in that park, and Queensland Parks says its sites suit tents, camper trailers and campervans, but not caravans. Permits are needed and fees apply (Queensland Parks: Springbrook camping, Queensland Parks: Springbrook FAQs, Queensland Parks: camping bookings).
Parking and height limits
- Arrive early. The City says parking at the Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta surf clubs is limited, with on-street parking in the surrounding streets (City of Gold Coast: Burleigh Heads beach, City of Gold Coast: Coolangatta beach).
- Leave the van at the park. Translink's 50 cent fares cover buses and the G:link tram on the Gold Coast (Translink: 50 cent fares), which is handy for Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
- Theme parks: Destination Gold Coast says free parking is available at the theme parks (Experience Gold Coast (Destination Gold Coast): theme parks and attractions).

The hinterland in a van
- Go early and slowly. These are day trips from the coast in most vans. Check park alerts and road conditions before you go (QLDTraffic: road conditions).
- Expect cooler weather. Queensland Parks says Lamington is on average 5°C cooler than Brisbane (Queensland Parks: Lamington, visiting safely).
Best time to go and drive times
- From Brisbane: about an hour south on the M1 Pacific Motorway in normal traffic, longer at peak times and on Friday afternoons. Check QLDTraffic: road conditions before you go.
- From Byron Bay: Byron is just over the border in New South Wales, roughly an hour's drive from Coolangatta.
Leaving the Gold Coast
- North: our Brisbane in a campervan guide has our 24 hours in the city, and our Noosa and the Sunshine Coast guide is next up the coast.
- The whole coast: our East Coast in a 2WD campervan guide covers Sydney to Cairns.

The City runs 7 Gold Coast Tourist Parks with van sites: Broadwater, Main Beach, Ocean Beach, Burleigh Beach, Tallebudgera Creek, Kirra Beach and Jacobs Well. There are also private holiday parks, and in the hinterland, the Settlement camping area in Springbrook National Park takes campervans with a permit.
Where can you park a big campervan on the Gold Coast?

Which Gold Coast beaches are patrolled?
The City's lifeguards patrol 28 beaches all year round and 42 in peak season and school holidays. Burleigh Heads and Coolangatta are patrolled 8am to 5pm every day of the year. Always swim between the red and yellow flags.
How far is the Gold Coast from Brisbane and Byron Bay?
About an hour's drive from Brisbane on the M1 in normal traffic, and roughly an hour from Coolangatta to Byron Bay. Allow longer at peak times and check QLDTraffic.
